Shaped windows can be a really eye-catching feature in any room but from a practical point of view they can be hard to style and find the right product for. Thankfully, we specialise in shaped solutions and have a range of made to measure options to enhance any shape.

How to cover odd-shaped windows

Of course there’s nothing to stop you from using a regular shaped blind or shutter to fit your shaped window as if it were a regular rectangle or square and literally cover the space. But it comes at the expense of showing off what can be a charming feature. So step away from a standard window dressing, and take a look at some other options.

Gable end shape

A gable end is one of the most stunning architectural shapes you can have in a home, and it’s not hard to understand why. Their visual appeal is undeniable, and it’s partly the sheer scale, filling the entire wall space and flooding the room with natural light. But it’s also the aesthetic beauty of the shape, with a symmetry that’s always pleasing to the eye, and also how the one overall shape gets broken down into multiple different shapes when it comes to designing a treatment for it. This ability to be split into multiple shapes is what offers more versatility and more practical than it may at first seem. Duette® blinds are a great option here, especially as the smart electric variety can be controlled by an app on your phone or with Google or Alexa but shaped shutters are also a viable option for a truly classic look.

Angles

Angled windows usually occur because they’re following the slope of the intersection between ceiling and wall, rather than from a random preference of shape. Whether you choose blinds or shaped shutters may be influenced by the space surrounding it – often these shapes are seen in corners which could restrict the use of a shutter if the lower section was a standard shutter, so it’s something to bear in mind. If the angle is high up to a tall ceiling, as in this image, or say for a mezzanine, then electric shaped blinds are probably the more practical option for convenience. If the angled forms part of a larger set then consider shutters, as you can create a uniform look that still offers full functionality.

Arches

There’s something quite soothing about an arch window, that gentle parabola that carries your eye up and around the top before falling once more. We love both these bathroom examples and the different solutions provided by different treatments. With a full length window like this, creating the illusion of one large shaped shutter really accentuates the arched window, although in reality the arch is one shutter and full height shutters sit beneath, operating separately. In the second example, rather than conceal the shape with shaped blinds, it’s been left visible to draw attention to it, with the addition of a transition or floating pleated blind to give privacy.

Bay window shapes

While not strictly speaking uniquely shaped windows, they can still present a challenge to dress, so it’s worth talking about the solutions. Shading solutions for bay windows can depend on which type of bay is involved - the more standard curved bay or a box bay.

Curved bay

Curved bay are often slightly easier to deal with especially if they’re three separate windows within a curved wall. The flow of light comes from roughly the same direction through all windows at the same time, compared to box bay where the side windows are at a more severe angle to the central window and therefore have a different light flow. The soft flowing fabric of Roman blinds works really well on the gently curving wall and if you opt for smart electric blinds you can benefit from being able to control the blinds individually or as one group for total convenience.

Box bay

With a much squarer profile box bays tend to be a feature in more contemporary settings than the traditional curve and whereas a curve usually features windows of the same size, a box bay tends to feature smaller side than central windows. Custom made blinds can of course be crafted to deal with this size anomaly but it can look a little visually unbalanced. Again this is where shutters’ uniformity becomes the ideal solution and creates a visually seamless flow along all three edges.

Roof shapes

Windows within ceilings or as actual roofs can bring so much more natural light into a room, and it’s safe to say that really, blinds are the only viable solution in these cases whether it involves shaped windows or not, thanks to gravity.

Lantern

Lantern windows are becoming an increasingly popular addition, as people extend their homes rather than move and, dependant on the room, they can directly function as part of the room and add to the atmosphere, for example if they’re above a dining table, or even a bath. Made up from multiple angled windows, the shape as it intersects the ceiling is usually a rectangle although the size is often far from standard so you’re looking for custom blinds to dress this shape, crafted to the exact specifications. The secret here is to utilise smart electric blinds, because access is normally a challenge due to the height and while the addition light is great, there will be times you want to cover the space up – when the skies are grey, the rain is pouring down and it feels like there’s a dark cloud hovering over your house springs to mind. Duette® blinds are a game changer in this situation, with the option to control them by voice, app or just a simple remote.

Skylight

Strictly speaking, a skylight is one that’s in the roof, but unlike a lantern window, is a single window set at the same angle as the roof. Nowadays, the term tends to also encompass angled windows set in the sloping eaves of a house, often referred to by the brand name that made them so popular. Either way, they’re a great way of getting natural into smaller spaces and dependant on the location you have a couple of different options for your skylight blinds. Currently our skylight roof blinds are wand operated but if it’s in the eaves you have more options. Opting for a floating blind allows the blind to be fitted to the frame, and it can raised or lowered from either end, giving you great control over the light. Both Duette and Pleated blinds can be installed this way, and if the room gets a lot of sun it’s worth considering a Pleated blind with a special coating that helps reflect the sun, stopping the room from overheating.

Conservatory roofs

A conservatory roof is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think of shaped blinds and often the challenge of the unusual shape is what stops people having them. But the benefits they bring makes it absolutely worth going down the custom made conservatory blinds road, transforming your conservatory into a room you can use all year round. We can craft both Duette and Pleated smart electric roof blinds, offering a huge range of colours and fabric finishes to enjoy.

Awkward shapes and placings

Sometimes it's not necessarily the shape of your window that's awkward, but the size, or where it's placed and that too can make it difficult to find the right window treatment. Perhaps its small windows that's a struggle finding blinds to fit, corner windows or simply a window that's too close to furniture or accessories. A made to measure blind or shutter will always be the best solution but both window blinds and shutters can be a viable solution depending on the circumstances. Custom blinds ensure a perfect fit and opting for smart electric blinds offers the ultimate convenience, allowing you to raise the blind by day and lower for privacy at night time without having to touch it. In tight spots shutters can be equally effective, as you don't have to open the whole casement, often simply angling the louvres is enough to give you the light levels you need.
