12 January 2018

It’s official: this Monday (15th January) is the most depressing day of the year. Known as Blue Monday, it’s the day when there’s a culmination of unpaid credit card bills arriving, cold dark nights, failed New Year resolutions and post-Christmas blues. But instead of feeling blue, try using the colour to decorate and give a new look to your home.

Decorate with versatile blue

Blue is sometimes considered to be a cold colour but it all depends on the shade you choose. From the softness of duck-egg blue, sky-blue and cornflower, the freshness of aqua, turquoise and royal blue, through to the vibrancy of midnight blue, azure and indigo, there’s a blue to suit every home.

Evoking the sky and the ocean, pale blues are restful and soothing making them perfect for anywhere you want to relax and unwind. In the bedroom, they’ll create the optimum atmosphere for you to get a great night’s sleep while in the bathroom, you can have a good soak while imagining being by the sea. As an added bonus, pale blues can give the illusion that a room is larger than it actually is.

Shades of deep blue create drama and have a real impact so they need to be utilised sparingly. This is where the classic combination of blue and white can be used to great effect. Or how about a dark blue feature wall with the other walls painted in elegant grey-blue? Dark shades such as navy are ideal as a backdrop for highlighting statement pieces of furniture such as a mirrored sideboard or an interesting floor lamp.

Blue fabrics and window shutters

Fabrics in a variety of different textures are great if you’d prefer to use blue as an accent colour. Consider a sofa or armchair upholstered in duck-egg blue or navy velvet; bed linen in crisp white, chambray, stripes or check; or blue and white striped or patterned rugs, throws and cushions.

Window shutters are also a good way to use blue as an accent colour. In rooms which get plenty of natural light, don’t be afraid to choose a strong shade of blue instead of a safe neutral. Blue shutters frame windows perfectly and provide a splash of colour at the same time.

Thomas Sanderson’s window shutters are available in a kaleidoscope of more than 80 colours including different shades of blue. With our Colour Match option, they can also be matched to any colour you like, for instance, if you want your shutters to be the same colour as your favourite wallpaper, cushions, sofa or paint. Our window shutters are tailor-made to your individual requirements using only the highest quality materials and are then professionally installed by our team of fitters. This means you can always be sure of a perfect fit.
